![]() These strike matches consist of five-on-five action – four players on the field for each team (who can be controlled by human players), with one goalie (who cannot be controlled by players) – with basically no rules to govern the Nintendo athletes players can tackle each other with no regard for safety, use items to temporarily incapacitate opponents, push each other into the electric fence that surrounds the field, and even pick up the ball with their hands. Players once again step onto a fantastical field of play to compete in a soccer-like sport called strike. While it has certainly been a long wait for fans of the GameCube and Wii entries, the more than 30 minutes of live gameplay I saw indicates that Mario Strikers: Battle League is worth the wait.Īs you might expect, Mario Strikers: Battle League carries forward many of the franchise's conventions. Just two years after the launch of that first game, Mario Strikers Charged launched on Wii, but that's the last we heard of the Mario Strikers franchise until earlier this year when Nintendo announced a new title for Switch, Mario Strikers: Battle League. However, in the time since that original launch, the series has only seen one additional title hit store shelves. With no official launch date yet announced, it's a safe bet that we'll hear more on Super Mario Strikers later this fall.First debuting in 2005 on Nintendo's GameCube, the Mario Strikers series has developed a cult fan base over the last 17 years. All in all, my brief time spent with Super Mario Strikers was highly enjoyable, and while the game is going to be eclipsed completely by the bigger announcements and titles at the show, Nintendo GameCube fans should certainly keep an eye on this one. There are multiple modes to play through, including the awesome grudge match and regular leagues. The game also runs perfectly at 60 frames per second with no visible signs of slowdown. Super Mario Strikers sports some tight, colorful, sharp and clear graphics. Somehow, the shot was blocked, but the goal keeper was left a little dazed and confused, reeling from the sheer force of the shot. ![]() Donkey Kong's "special" turned a regular pass from one of his lackeys into a slo-mo roundhouse kick that sent the ball ablaze towards my trembling goalie. ![]() Of course, it wouldn't be a true fantasy Nintendo sports title without some incredibly silly and cool special moves with which to blast the football towards the goalie, and hopefully, in the back of the net. As you'd expect in a soccer game, the player can switch between players on the fly to better control the flow of the game and to get ready for those all-important tackles and charges.Ī nice added touch to the controls is the ability to use the C-stick to perform on-the-fly dekes to evade the oncoming opponents. The pitch itself is themed on one of a number of Mario-influenced arenas, with the sidelines acting like electrified fences if the ball wanders out of bounds. Playing Super Mario Strikers is a snap, with volleys, chips, dekes, passes, and turbo runs being very simple to off on the controller. My opponents: a team of day-glo toads lead by the loveable monkey, Donkey Kong. I managed to snag a good couple of two-goal matches, selecting the ever-popular Mario as the leader of my team with a handful of koopas backing me up down-pitch. The game's good for up to four players on the pitch at once, and players can choose from the usual suspects in terms of strikers for their teams. Playable on at Nintendo's E3 2005 booth, Super Mario Strikers is a blast to play and easy to control. As you'd expect Super Mario Strikers is a fun, colorful game that offers up some crazy, over-the-top on-field action. Well, in its infinite wisdom, Nintendo is expanding its sports roster on the GameCube to include baseball, and now even the beautiful game of soccer. There's no doubt that Nintendo's cartoony sports titles are, generally speaking, a lot of fun to play - especially when you throw a couple of players into the mix.
